The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria — descend into Khazad-dum and reclaim the dwarven homeland
The dark of Moria is no longer a doom — it's a dare. The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is a co-op survival game by Free Range Games (published by North Beach Games), set in Tolkien's world. You lead a band of Durin's dwarves back into the legendary mines of Khazad-dum: pickaxe in hand, torch flickering, and something still breathing in the deep. Here you buy a Steam activation key — the game lands straight in your library, yours to keep, no subscriptions.
What kind of game this is
It's a third-person survival-craft about rebuilding an ancient dwarven realm. The halls of Moria are procedurally generated, so every descent is a fresh maze of shafts, bridges and cave-ins. You mine ore, forge gear, restore furnaces and forges, and manage hunger, sleep, temperature and — crucially — noise: hammer the rock too loudly and every foul thing underground comes running toward your torchlight. Darkness here isn't set dressing, it's a mechanic — without light a dwarf goes blind and gripped by fear.
Lore and atmosphere
The story unfolds in the Fourth Age, after the events of The Lord of the Rings: dwarves led by heirs of Durin's folk return to reclaim the lost realm of Khazad-dum from the darkness that has festered in its depths for centuries. In the opening cinematic, Gimli is voiced by John Rhys-Davies — the very actor from Peter Jackson's films. The score draws on Tolkien's themes, and the halls of Moria themselves — from flooded mines to vast pillared chambers — carry that ancient, dangerous beauty of the world beneath the mountains.
What you'll actually do
The core loop is a descent ever deeper: scout fresh tunnels, mine ore and rare materials, haul them back to camp, smelt them, forge better armor and weapons, repair ancient dwarven machinery and open paths further down. The deeper you go, the deadlier it gets — tougher orcs, trolls and bosses appear, the dark grows thicker and the resources more valuable. Alongside that you build up your base, placing workbenches, forges and lighting so you have somewhere to rest and recover before the next push.
Solo or with friends
You can brave Moria alone, but the game truly comes alive in co-op. A host can invite up to eight other players into a single expedition — you share the haul, watch each other's backs against orc hordes, and build up camp together. The Golden Update added crossplay between Steam and Xbox and a separate Sandbox mode for players who'd rather build and dig without story pressure.
What the key includes
You get the base Return to Moria game for Steam (PC, Windows). It's the full version with all the core campaign content of reclaiming Khazad-dum, the Sandbox mode and crossplay. Optional cosmetic packs (such as Beorn's Lodge, Orc Hunter, Rohan Pack and other DLC) are not included in this key — those are separate Steam purchases, and you won't need to buy the base game again for them since you'll already own it.
Key region
This is a global key — it activates on Steam worldwide, no region lock, no VPN juggling. Just enter the code in the Steam client and the game is yours.
How to activate the key on Steam
It takes a minute inside the client:
- Open Steam → bottom "Games" menu → "Activate a Product on Steam".
- Accept the terms and enter the key we send you.
- The game appears in your library — hit "Install" and head down into Moria.
The key binds to your Steam account for good: reinstall and play whenever you like; you only need the internet for downloading and co-op.
System notes
The game runs on Windows PC via Steam. Moria's darkness and dynamic lighting love a capable GPU, so check your PC against the requirements on the Steam store page before buying. For co-op a stable connection helps — raids into the lower halls with friends are worth it.
If you love survival and crafting
If Return to Moria clicks for you, check out other co-op survival titles in our catalog: the atmospheric Viking Valheim, the fairytale survival of Enshrouded, or the vampiric V Rising. All three are about gathering resources, raising a base and fighting shoulder to shoulder.
Quick answers
The key is global and activates on Steam anywhere. This is the full game, not a DLC — the base version with Sandbox and crossplay. Code delivery usually takes a couple of minutes after payment. If anything goes sideways with activation, we're around to help sort it out.
