The story unfolds in the gap between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring — the dark stretch the books only hint at. After his encounter with Bilbo, Gollum is enslaved in Mordor, escapes, is captured by the elves of Mirkwood and finally faces interrogation by Gandalf. It's a tale of a creature broken by the Ring, clinging to the one thing he has left — his precious. Along the way you'll see familiar book locations from an unusual angle — the mines and towers of Mordor, the thickets of Mirkwood — and meet characters every Tolkien fan knows by name.

The core hook is the split mind. At key moments you choose who takes over: the cunning, selfish Gollum or the timid Sméagol who still remembers kindness. These dialogue forks set the tone of scenes and underline the character's inner struggle.

How the gameplay works

This is a third-person game built around stealth and platforming, not combat. Gollum is weak in a straight fight, so your tools are shadows, tall grass and vertical level design. Here's what the loop looks like:

  • Climbing and traversal. Gollum scrambles up ledges, vines and outcrops, moving nimbly where an ordinary hero would be stuck.
  • Stealth. In hostile zones you hide in grass and shadows, slip past orcs and distract them. Getting spotted in a stealth zone is an instant fail, so plan your route.
  • Silent takedowns. Helmetless orcs can be removed quietly to clear a path.
  • Gollum/Sméagol choices. Periodic forks reflecting the hero's dual nature.

What's in the base edition

RU and ROW versions: which key to pick
