Tails of Iron β a rat kingdom, frogs and timing-based bosses
Tails of Iron is a souls-like RPG adventure from the UK studio Odd Bug Studio (published by United Label and CI Games), released on September 17, 2021. You play as Redgi, a young rat and heir to the Iron Throne. On the very first day of his reign the Rat Kingdom is overrun by the Frog Clan led by the merciless Greenwart: Redgi's father is killed, homes burn, the family scatters. The rest is your story β reclaim the ruins, settle the score with the frogs and rebuild the kingdom piece by piece. Here you buy a Steam gift that arrives straight in your account.
What kind of game it is and why people love it
On the surface it's a 2D side-scroller, but at heart it's a true souls-like: death is quick, enemies hit hard, and every fight is about reading the opponent's wind-up. Each attack is marked by colour β a white flash means block with your shield, yellow means dodge-roll, red means run, it can't be parried. Miss the timing and your little rat goes down in a couple of blows. That makes Tails of Iron feel like a small but vicious Dark Souls about animals: no level grinding, just skill and patience.
A real point of pride is the hand-drawn 2D art. It's a grim fairy tale styled like an old illustrated storybook: filthy dungeons, rat taverns, frog swamps, forges and arenas. And it's all narrated by Doug Cockle β the very voice of Geralt from The Witcher. His gravelly narration carries the story and comments on what Redgi is going through. Voice-over is in English with localized subtitles available.
Gameplay: forging, armour and the arena
Beyond combat, Tails of Iron has a satisfying crafting loop. You collect blueprints and materials, forge armour and weapons, repair and decorate your castle, take quests from the locals and clear out enemy lairs. Weapons come in classes β fast light blades, heavy hammers, spears and ranged gear (bow, crossbow, rodent firearms). Armour affects not only defense but weight: overload yourself and you'll roll slowly and eat hits. So rebuilding your loadout for each boss genuinely matters.
- Bosses. The main reason to play. Giant frogs, moles and insects, each with its own moveset and rhythm.
- Mole Arena. A separate wave-based challenge mode for those who want more than the main story.
- Cooking and potions. Redgi prepares food and brews that heal and grant temporary buffs before a tough fight.
What the gift includes: the game plus free expansions
You get the full base Tails of Iron game. A nice bonus: the developers released two free story expansions, and they're already part of the game β nothing extra to buy.
- Bloody Whiskers β a post-game questline: new difficulty modes, five new bosses, special armour and weapons, and a secret.
- Bright Fir Forest β a continuation of Redgi's journey: 13 new quests and three new challengers in the Mole Arena.
So as soon as the gift lands in your library, all of this content is available right away β it's not paid DLC, it's part of the base version.
Story and atmosphere
The story is told almost without conventional dialogue β characters 'speak' through picture-icons in speech bubbles, and Doug Cockle's narration ties it all together. That makes Tails of Iron read like a dark fable: about duty, revenge, the loss of home and a small king growing up in a big war. The world is split into frog swamps, mole burrows, spider thickets and rat settlements β each region has its own bestiary, its own traps and its own big boss at the end. Despite the cute animal wrapping, the tone is grown-up and at times genuinely brutal.
How the Steam gift arrives
To be clear: there's nothing to type in anywhere β it's a full Steam gift that lands straight in your account. After payment our bot adds you as a friend itself (or you follow an invite link it sends), delivers the gift and then removes itself from your friends. You don't have to send or accept a friend request manually β it all happens automatically. Steam Guard is not required. Accept the gift and the game stays in your library forever, just like anything bought on Steam. The whole thing usually takes a couple of minutes.
What to check before buying
- Region. Your Steam account region must match the gift's region β otherwise Steam won't accept it.
- Library. You must not already own the game: Steam rejects a gift for a title that's already on your account.
- Friends. Nothing to send on your side β the bot adds itself, hands over the gift and leaves; you just click "Accept".
Where it runs and how demanding it is
Playing on Steam Deck? The game is officially supported and runs great out of the box. Tails of Iron's system requirements are low, so it'll run on almost any modern PC or laptop. Once the gift is on your account, all that's left is to download and play β the game stays yours forever, like anything bought on Steam.
Who it's for
Tails of Iron is for players who love a challenge and gorgeous hand-drawn art but don't want to sink into an 80-hour AAA game. It's a compact, dense adventure of around 10β15 hours where every boss kill is honestly earned. If you enjoy souls-like adventures with a dark fairy-tale mood, check out the sequel Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter, and for kindred spirits, the grim metroidvanias Blasphemous and Hollow Knight.
