Story and setting

The world of Tails of Iron is a hand-drawn rodent kingdom in the spirit of Redwall and Mouse Guard: cozy burrows, rusted armor, the medieval life of beasts. The peace shatters when a horde of frogs kills the old king and ravages the land. Young Redgi is left alone and sets out to reclaim his home, avenge his father and piece a broken kingdom back together. The story is told with few words — through the characters’ expressive thought-images and events rather than walls of text.

Doug Cockle as the narrator

A special point of pride is the voice work. The whole game is carried by the deep, raspy voice of Doug Cockle, the very actor who gave Geralt of Rivia his voice in The Witcher. His narration leads you from prologue to finale and turns a tale of rats and frogs into a genuinely grim saga. Text localization for the interface and subtitles is available, so the journey reads clearly even without knowing the language of the voiceover.

Combat — not for the relaxed

Fights here are harsh and souls-inspired: any enemy can punish a mistake. Your kit includes dodge-rolls, stunning parries and finishing executions. Enemy attacks are colour-coded: red must be dodged, yellow must be parried, and you have to read those tells fast. There is ranged combat too — a bow and arrow. Death comes from a couple of clean hits, so timing and patience matter more than mashing. Bosses are an exam of their own: each has its own attack set and phases, and at first you learn their moves at the cost of your own hide, which makes finally downing a giant feel honestly earned.

Weapons, armor and gear

You can kit Redgi out to your style. Weapons split by type: axes hit heavy, spears are quick and nimble, a broadsword gives all-round balance. Armor has character too — heavy sets soak damage better but slow your dodge-roll, while light sets keep you nimble at the cost of protection. As you progress you gather blueprints, forge and upgrade gear, tuning loadouts for specific bosses and biomes.

Exploration, forge and cooking

Between clashes Tails of Iron lets you breathe and look around. You wander interconnected regions of the kingdom, rebuild the ancestral castle, take side errands from the locals and even fish for rare ingredients. Gathered materials feed the forge for crafting and upgrading weapons and armor, while the kitchen turns them into dishes: some restore health, others grant temporary buffs before a tough boss. The world is drawn with a wealth of small details — from a soot-stained kitchen to fields ravaged by the frog horde — and simply taking it in is a pleasure of its own.

What is included and the free Bloody Whiskers expansion

The key unlocks the full game. On top of the base campaign, Tails of Iron has a free expansion, Bloody Whiskers, that installs over it and continues the story after the finale: a new post-game questline, two extra difficulty modes, five new bosses, a set of special armors and weapons, and a secret best left buried. Fans of big narrative RPGs might also eye Baldur's Gate 3 — a different flavour of the genre, but also about choices and consequences.

Where the Tails of Iron key arrives and how to enter it
