Stronghold 2 is Firefly Studios' classic strategy where the castle truly lives: peasants chop wood and bake bread, archers freeze on the walls, and you sit in your keep deciding whether to win the people over with feasts or grind them down with taxes. The original launched back in 2005, and on October 5, 2017 Firefly released Stronghold 2: Steam Edition — the same game, polished for modern Steam. What kind of game it is

It's a blend of city-builder and RTS set in medieval England. Half the fun is the economy: production chains, the mood of your subjects, crime and justice (yes, there's a stocks and a gallows). The other half is war: sieges, trebuchets, boiling oil poured on attackers, and rival AI lords with nasty tempers. Stronghold 2 has two story paths — the Path of Peace, about rebuilding a kingdom, and the Path of War, about seizing your neighbours' castles.

How the Steam Edition differs from the old disc

The 2017 re-release isn't a remake but a careful update of the original. What was added:

• 16:9 widescreen resolutions and touched-up textures;
• multiplayer moved onto Steam's service, making online play simpler;
• six new maps;
• Steam Workshop — share and download custom maps;

• digital versions of the official art book and soundtrack.

Stronghold 2's signature twist over the first game is the Honor system. Climbing the ranks from knight to prince and expanding your lands takes more than gold: you have to throw feasts in the great hall and maintain gardens, fountains and other refinements that please the court. Honor unlocks new troops and buildings, so you constantly balance “feed the army” against “impress the nobility.” It turns peaceful maps into a puzzle of their own, where you don't fight so much as rule.

Crime, justice and the mood of your people

It's not only gold that accumulates in a castle — criminals do too. A justice system handles theft and disorder: lock an offender in the stocks, send them to the gallows, or show mercy — and every choice shifts the fear and love of your subjects. Too cruel a lord gets riots; too soft a one gets rampant theft. Juggling popularity, taxes, food and entertainment is the heart of the game and the foundation the whole castle economy rests on.

Neighbours with personality

The war campaign and skirmish maps throw AI lords at you, each with their own temper: some trade and turtle, others pick a fight at the first chance. Series staples like the Rat, the Snake, the Wolf and the Pig keep sieges from feeling faceless — you quickly learn who's about to stab you in the back. Repelling an assault and then taking a rival's keep yourself with trebuchets and ladders is a pleasure all its own.
