Stronghold HD: build a castle that won't fall
Stronghold HD is the very castle strategy game people have remembered since the early 2000s. Firefly Studios shipped the original in 2001 and put together this HD re-release for Steam in 2012: the same core, the same campaigns, but now your whole castle and battlefield fit on a modern widescreen monitor. Here you don't just command an army — you raise a living fortress from scratch, where every peasant eats bread, every archer mans a wall, and every economic mistake comes back to bite you during a siege.
What kind of game it is
Stronghold blends two things that rarely sit together this smoothly: a city-building sim and real-time military strategy. First you lay out your land — houses, farms, mills, bakeries, wells and workshops to keep the people fed and content. Your popularity is right there on screen: taxes, food, ale in the tavern, even decoration placement decide whether folk stay within your walls or wander off. Then war arrives — you ring the settlement with stone walls, raise towers, pour boiling pitch on attackers and march your own host against rival castles.
Two campaigns and free build
Stronghold HD ships with two large single-player campaigns. The military one is a 21-mission story where you free medieval England from four renegade lords: the Rat, the Pig, the Snake and the Wolf. The objectives vary — break a siege here, capture an enemy keep there, simply survive a wave of assaults or raise a target sum of gold. The second, economic campaign is for those who love peaceful building: the challenge isn't swords but logistics, resources and a balanced economy. On top of that there's a free-build mode on standalone maps and a built-in editor for crafting your own siege scenarios.
What the HD version adds
The 2012 HD re-release isn't a remake but a careful adaptation. The headline addition is support for modern resolutions: the camera pulls back so you see the whole fortified complex at once, with no endless scrolling around a cramped window. Steam Cloud is wired in so saves sync between machines, and compatibility reaches current Windows versions. In gameplay, balance and atmosphere it's still the same classic Stronghold that many call the best entry in the series.

A word on sieges and defence
The heart of Stronghold is its siege system. Walls here aren't decoration: you can build them in layers, station archers and crossbowmen along them, add towers for line of sight and defensive contraptions. The attacker hauls ladders, rams, catapults and siege towers, digs moats and tries to set your buildings ablaze. You answer with boiling pitch, traps and counter-attacks. Every map becomes a small engineering puzzle: where to make a choke point, where to seat your shooters, how to keep the enemy away from your food store. That's why the same missions can be solved many ways — from stubborn defence to an aggressive early rush.
Economy as the foundation
Military might in Stronghold grows out of your economy. No timber, no palisade; no stone, no walls; no iron and pitch, no serious weaponry. The people need feeding (bread, cheese, meat, apples), ale to drink and taxes kept reasonable, or popularity drops and they leave. This “feed first, fight later” loop is what makes the game so absorbing: you're forever balancing the growth of your settlement against preparing for the inevitable assault.
