Squad isn't about your personal frag count. It's about communication, discipline and that moment when nine strangers turn into a coordinated unit that takes an objective under fire. Developer Offworld Industries built a game where voice comms, map markers and the commander's orders matter more than raw reflexes. You don't run around solo here — you're part of a squad, and how well you hold formation decides the outcome of a hundred-player battle.

What makes Squad special

Battles play out on huge maps — from Asian rice paddies to Eastern European industrial zones and Middle Eastern deserts. Up to 100 players per match, dozens of factions, armoured vehicles, logistics trucks and helicopters you actually have to learn to fly. The gunplay is grounded: bullets aren't hitscan, range demands lead and drop, and stepping out without cover is almost always a mistake.

  • The commander role. One player takes the strategic layer: calling in support, placing deployment points, coordinating squads. Without a commander you're just a crowd; with one you're an army.
  • Logistics and FOBs. Forward bases, digging fortifications, trucking in ammo and vehicles — supply is a whole game inside the game.
  • Realism without the tedium. Squad balances simulation and accessibility: there's a learning curve, but it isn't the thousand-button overload of hardcore milsims.

Squad editions and packs

There are two kinds of purchase. First, the Squad base game — the standard version, which is all you need to play everything: every map, faction and mode is available from the start. Second, the Commander Edition, a pack of extra content layered on top of the game.

The Commander Edition includes weapon-skin packs (camo and themed sets), several emote packs, both volumes of the original soundtrack and the Canadian Armed Forces faction. Keep in mind: the Commander Edition is an add-on, not a standalone copy. To use it, the base Squad must already be owned on the same Steam account. If you don't own the base game yet, grab the game key first.

Global key versus CIS region

The base game comes as two key options. The Global key activates on Steam in any region worldwide — pick it if you're unsure or your account is outside the CIS. The CIS key only activates on accounts set to a CIS region (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries). It's the same game either way — only the activation region differs, so choose by your account's region. The Commander Edition in our catalogue is the CIS variant.

How to activate a Steam key

It takes a minute. Open the Steam client, click "Add a Game" in the bottom-left → "Activate a Product on Steam", paste the code and confirm. Squad appears in your library — just install it. For the CIS variant, make sure your Steam account region is set to a CIS country, otherwise Steam won't accept the key. The Commander Edition activates the same way and adds cosmetics and the soundtrack to the game you already own.

It's a game of long, tense engagements where capturing a single point can feel like a small military operation. Vehicles, factions and the scale of battle

A real highlight of Squad is its vehicles. Tanks, IFVs, APCs, buggies, logistics trucks and helicopters: each has its own crew, role and vulnerabilities. The teamwork here is genuinely layered — while infantry holds a point, logi runs haul ammo to a FOB, an APC driver covers a flank and a pilot ferries an entire squad across the map. There are well over a dozen factions, from regular armies to irregular forces with their own arsenals and tactics, so every side feels different to play. It's this scale — dozens of vehicles and up to a hundred live players on one map — that turns an ordinary point capture into a small military operation.

Quick answers

The key is PC only (Windows, Steam). The base version is enough for all of the game's content; the Commander Edition is cosmetics and a soundtrack on top of it and requires the base Squad. The Global key activates anywhere, the CIS key only on a CIS-region account. Once activated, the game is yours for good.
