Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition: everything about the edition, content and Steam key activation
Resident Evil 5 (Biohazard 5 in Japan) launched in 2009 and became one of Capcom's best-selling entries in the series. The story takes place in the fictional African region of Kijuju, where BSAA operative Chris Redfield and his partner Sheva Alomar investigate an outbreak of a new bio-weapon and come face to face with an old enemy — Albert Wesker. It's a third-person action game built around co-op: the entire campaign is meant to be played by two, and co-op is where Resident Evil 5 truly shines.

- Desperate Escape — a fast-paced episode starring Jill Valentine and BSAA agent Josh Stone fighting their way out of the Tricell facility. Far more combat-heavy and intense than Lost in Nightmares.
- Versus — a competitive mode based on Mercenaries: score chases and clashes with other players.
- The Mercenaries Reunion — an expanded version of the Mercenaries minigame with extra characters and alternate costumes.
- Bonus costumes and figures — a set of alternate outfits for Chris and Sheva.
Key point: the base game is already inside the Gold Edition. You do not need a separately purchased Resident Evil 5 — this is a complete standalone key, not an upgrade to an existing copy.
How the Gold Edition differs from the standard version
The standard Resident Evil 5 includes only the main campaign and the base Mercenaries. The Gold Edition adds the whole Untold Stories set on top — two story episodes, Versus mode, Mercenaries Reunion and costumes. If you want more than just the main story and prefer to get all the extra content in a single key without buying DLC piece by piece, the Gold Edition is the way to go.
Key region: CIS or Rest of World
This product comes in two regional variants, and picking the right one matters. The CIS variant activates on CIS-region Steam accounts, the Rest of World (ROW) variant on accounts outside the CIS. The key region must match your Steam account region, otherwise activation will fail with a region-mismatch error and Steam won't accept the code. How to activate the key in Steam
Activation takes a minute. Open the Steam client, click “Games” at the bottom left, then “Activate a Product on Steam”, enter the code you received and confirm. Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition will appear in your library — just download it. All the Untold Stories content is already tied to this version, no separate activation needed. The Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape episodes launch from the game's main menu under the extra scenarios section.
Co-op and how to play it best
Resident Evil 5 was designed from the ground up as a co-op action game. The second player controls Sheva, and the whole campaign can be played by two online. Real-time inventory management, swapping ammo and herbs, joint melee finishers — all of it is built for a duo. Solo, Sheva is handled by an AI partner, but a live second player unlocks the full experience. If you plan to play co-op, note that the second player needs their own copy of the game.
