Fallout 3: back into the Capital Wasteland
Fallout 3 is the landmark post-apocalyptic RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, released in 2008, that brought the Fallout series into a full first- and third-person 3D world. You're born inside Vault 101, live your childhood underground, then step out into the radiation-scorched Capital Wasteland — the ruins of Washington, D.C. A shattered Capitol, a Lincoln Memorial held by slavers, and a Metro crawling with ghouls aren't just scenery; they're a place where every choice you make reshapes the lives of people and whole settlements. Here you buy a Steam activation key and decide for yourself: grab the base game, or the full Game of the Year edition with every add-on.
What makes Fallout 3 special
This is an open-world RPG where freedom is the real protagonist. You can chase the main story about finding your father and Project Purity, or spend weeks exploring ruins, trading with caravans, joining the Brotherhood of Steel, or siding with raiders instead. The V.A.T.S. system pauses combat and lets you target enemy limbs in slow motion — a signature mechanic that still feels fresh. Karma reacts to your actions: blow up the entire town of Megaton for a reward, or defuse the bomb and become its hero — your call.
Base version vs. Game of the Year Edition
There are two editions in the catalog, and the difference is simple but important. The base version is Fallout 3 without add-ons. The Game of the Year Edition, released in 2009, includes the base game plus all five official add-ons. If you want the whole game without buying content piece by piece, go for GOTY.
What the five GOTY add-ons include:
- Operation: Anchorage — a combat simulation of liberating Alaska from Chinese forces, focused on action and trophy gear.
- The Pitt — a grim Pittsburgh, a conflict between slaves and raiders, and a moral choice with no clean right answer.
- Broken Steel — a continuation of the main story past the original ending, the level cap raised from 20 to 30, and a battle alongside Liberty Prime.
- Point Lookout — a huge, murky swampland on the Maryland coast; an open, almost horror-tinged adventure.
- Mothership Zeta — an alien abduction and an escape from a spacecraft in orbit.
Important: in GOTY all five add-ons are already baked into the single key — you don't buy the base game or DLC separately. Broken Steel removes the level cap and extends the ending, so progression feels noticeably deeper than in the base version.
Key regions: CIS, Latin America, Philippines
These are regional Steam keys, not global ones. The catalog offers variants for three regions: CIS, Latin America (LATAM) and the Philippines (PH). Your Steam account's region must match the key's region — otherwise Steam simply won't accept activation and will throw a "product not available in your region" error. So check the note on each lot and pick exactly your region. The Game of the Year Edition is available for the CIS region; the base version is available for CIS, LATAM and the Philippines.
How to activate the key on Steam
Activation takes a minute. Open the Steam client, click «Games» in the bottom menu, then «Activate a Product on Steam», enter the code you received and confirm. After that Fallout 3 (and, for GOTY, all five add-ons) appears in your library, ready to download. You don't need to enter anything in advance — the key is delivered as a code right after payment.
Games for Windows Live and the first launch
The Steam version of Fallout 3 historically relies on Games for Windows Live, so on first launch the game may prompt you to install that component. This is normal behavior for a 2008 title and doesn't interfere with key activation — the game lands in your library either way. If GFWL gets in the way, the community has long-standing, reliable ways to bypass it and play without extra pop-ups.
Where you can play
Fallout 3 is a Windows PC game. It runs easily on modern hardware, but as an older project it sometimes needs minor compatibility tweaks. On Steam Deck and Linux it runs through Proton; be ready for some manual tuning for stability. The most trouble-free option is native Windows.

Enjoyed the Capital Wasteland? Check out other games in the series and Bethesda universe. Fallout: New Vegas builds on the same combat and V.A.T.S. but adds deeper factions and reputation. Fallout 4 is the next big chapter with crafting, settlement building and revamped gunplay. And if you want the same open world in a fantasy setting, take a look at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from the same studio.
What you get from us
You buy a Steam activation key and activate the game to your account for good — this is ownership, not a subscription. Pick the edition (base or GOTY) and the region, place the order and get your code. Everything else happens inside your own Steam: library, cloud saves, achievements — all standard.
