DayZ: Steam key, editions and code activation

DayZ isn't a "hop in, shoot, hop out" arcade — it's a long, tense survival story where any run-in with another living person can be your last. The project grew out of an Arma 2 mod: Bohemia Interactive pushed Steam Early Access back in December 2013, and the full 1.0 release landed on December 13, 2018. Since then it has piled on maps, mechanics and a stubborn community that still swaps stories about its raids. What DayZ actually is

DayZ is a hardcore first- or third-person online survival sim set in an open post-Soviet world after an infection outbreak. The infected are dangerous, but the real enemies are cold, hunger, thirst, disease and, above all, other survivors. A medkit, a can of stew and a working rifle matter more than any level, because there's no classic leveling here: there's only you, whatever is in your backpack and the reputation you earn through your choices. One lucky sweep of a military base turns a ragged nobody into a walking arsenal, and one slip by the campfire wipes ten hours of progress. That honest brutality is exactly what keeps people playing for years.

Maps: Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal

The base game ships with two maps, and a third arrives with the expansion:

• Chernarus (around 230 km²) — the iconic post-Soviet terrain of panel blocks, abandoned bases and airfields where the legend started.
• Livonia (around 163 km²) — dense forests, boggy swamps and moody weather; it used to be paid DLC but has long been given away free with every version.
• Sakhal (around 105 km²) — the newest and harshest map, part of the Frostline expansion: volcanic islands, ice and a completely different survival rhythm.

The Frostline expansion and the Sakhal map

Frostline released on October 15, 2024 and was DayZ's first major paid expansion in a long time. At its heart is the new Sakhal map, inspired by islands north of Japan and in the far east: an active volcano, frozen lakes, ice shelves, hot springs and hundreds of unique assets. It's the most compact territory in the game, yet the toughest on climate — survival here revolves around staying warm. Frostline brings caves as shelter from the elements, new animals, reworked fishing, fresh diseases, a boat and an ice axe you can both climb with and swing at anyone who creeps too close. Keep the main thing in mind: Frostline is a DLC, not a standalone game. It won't launch without the base DayZ installed, so you need a key for the game itself first and only then the expansion code.

Editions: base version versus Deluxe Edition

Short version — gameplay-wise the base version and the Deluxe Edition are the same game. Both include Chernarus and Livonia, both get identical patches. The only difference is the nice extras: the Deluxe Edition adds a ten-track official soundtrack by composer Dikolson and a set of exclusive desktop wallpapers. Deluxe grants no hidden content, weapons or advantages — it's a "for the collection" version for people who like having that atmospheric apocalypse score on hand. So if you just want the game, the base DayZ key covers everything; take Deluxe deliberately, for the soundtrack and wallpapers.

Key region: CIS or GLOBAL

The catalog variants come in two code regions. A CIS key activates on Steam accounts in the CIS region, while GLOBAL has no regional limits and is accepted worldwide. These aren't different versions or different content — only where Steam lets you enter the code differs. The rule is simple: look at which country your Steam account is tied to. A CIS account — take the CIS variant, usually the better value; an account from another country — take GLOBAL so the code definitely goes through. If the key region and account region diverge, activation may fail, so decide on the variant in advance.

How to activate a DayZ code in Steam

The process is short and familiar to anyone who has ever entered a key. After you place the order, the activation code arrives at the email you enter in the "Email for receiving the code" field and is duplicated inside the order on the site. Then you open the Steam client, go to the "Games" menu, choose "Activate a Product on Steam", enter the DayZ key and accept the license agreement — the game or expansion appears in your library and starts downloading. For Frostline the steps are the same, just remember the expansion only comes alive on top of an already installed base DayZ. Key refunds: one continuous video

Keys are a digital product, so refunds on a disputed activation follow one strict rule. We need a single-take video recording: from the moment of purchase and opening the order to the attempt to enter the code in Steam, with no editing, no cuts and no pauses. If the recording has splicing, cuts or stops, or the code is already activated by then, a refund can't be arranged. This is standard practice for digital codes and it protects both you and the store from disputed situations. In every other case a DayZ key is non-refundable — factor that in before buying.

Crimea and sanctioned regions

In regions under international sanctions (Crimea, for example) Steam itself officially limits some features — purchases and wallet top-ups. From user experience, activating a DayZ code there does work, but we can't guarantee Steam's behaviour in such territories and give no absolute certainty for a sanctioned region.
