Age of Mythology: Retold — a remaster of the cult mythological strategy

Age of Mythology: Retold brings the legendary 2002 real-time strategy back in modern form: rebuilt visuals, refreshed balance and the full scale of mythological warfare under the hood of familiar mechanics. You grow a settlement through the ages, gather resources, hoard favor from the gods and march not only mortal armies but mythical creatures into battle — from minotaurs to dragons. It's the AoM you'll want to return to after years, and it now looks and plays like a game of today.

What the base game contains

The core of Age of Mythology: Retold is four full pantheons: Greek, Egyptian, Norse and the fantastical Atlantean. Each has its major gods, minor deities, unique myth units and god powers that swing a fight — earthquakes, locust swarms, meteor showers. The “Fall of the Trident” campaign follows the Atlantean Arkantos across dozens of missions around the ancient world, and beyond it you get skirmishes against the AI, multiplayer and endless random-map battles.

Standard or Premium — which to pick

The Standard Edition is the complete base: all four pantheons and the campaign, nothing cut, the clean foundation of the game. The Premium Edition includes all of that plus the premium content: the “Freyr” god pack (the Norse god of plenty with his own set of upgrades), the Legacy Deity Portrait Pack — nostalgic deity portraits from the original Age of Mythology, the exclusive Tsukuyomi portrait, and both major expansions. If you're stepping in for the first time and want everything at once, the Premium Edition settles it with a single key.

Premium Upgrade — only on top of a game you already own

The Premium Upgrade stands apart. It isn't a copy of the game but an upgrade add-on: it adds the same “Freyr” pack, the legacy portraits and both expansions to your library, but it requires the Standard Edition to already be on your Steam account. The logic is simple: if you once bought the base game and now want the full premium content, you grab the Upgrade instead of buying the Premium Edition all over again. If you don't own the base game yet, there's nothing for the Upgrade to apply to — in that case Standard or the full Premium Edition is your pick.

Expansions: China and Japan

The premium content carries two large expansions, and both are already out. “Immortal Pillars” opens the Chinese pantheon: new gods, myth units, god powers and the “Pillars of the Gods” campaign inspired by ancient legends. “Heavenly Spear” adds the Japanese pantheon — command gods, heroes and yokai, field samurai and play through the “Yasuko's Tale” campaign. Together they noticeably widen the roster and play styles, so for variety hunters they're a strong argument for Premium.

Global key and Steam activation

Every option is a Steam key with global activation: there's no region lock, the code works in any country. After payment you receive a code, open Steam, go to “Games” → “Activate a Product on Steam”, enter the key — and the game lands in your library. No signing into someone else's account: you activate the purchase on your own Steam and own it for good. Age of Mythology: Retold is rated Steam Deck Playable, so handheld play is on the table too.

Why Retold keeps you hooked

It comes down to replayability. There are so many “major god + minor gods” combinations that two games back to back are almost never alike: one match you crush with early myth infantry, the next you build an economy toward a late titan rush, the next you wait for one decisive god power. Add co-op, ranked multiplayer and the built-in scenario editor and the content doesn't run dry. And the mythological flavor — huge creatures and flashy powers — turns every major clash into a spectacle. With both expansions the roster grows to six pantheons, multiplying the room for experimentation.

Who it's for

If you love thoughtful strategy with economy, armies and a divine factor, this is your game. Genre veterans will enjoy the depth and micromanagement, newcomers the clear campaign and tutorial. If you like military tactics at a different scale, check out Arma 3. For a benchmark single-player PC classic we suggest Portal 2, and if you want another big release on a key, look at Doom: The Dark Ages. In the Brawl Games catalog the Age of Mythology: Retold key is delivered as a Steam activation code — pick the edition that fits your situation and grab it. 🏛️⚡
