FAQ

World War Z: a co-op meat grinder against zombie hordes on Steam

World War Z is a four-player co-op third-person shooter where the dead don't come one by one β€” they come as living avalanches. Hundreds of the infected climb over each other, stack into pyramids and pour over walls, and your squad of four has to mow the wave down before it overruns your fortifications. Here you grab the game as a Steam gift: after payment our bot sends you the gift itself, and World War Z lands in your library.

What the game is

The game was made by Saber Interactive and the original launched on 16 April 2019. Inspired by the film and novel of the same name, it strings together short story episodes across the world β€” New York, Jerusalem, Moscow, Tokyo and more. The format is co-op runs: the four of you clear a chapter, place turrets and barricades, hold points and fend off zombie β€œstorms” using the series' signature Swarm Engine, which throws hundreds and thousands of bodies on screen at once. There are also PvPvE modes where live players get in each other's way while the horde piles onto everyone.

How World War Z: Aftermath differs from the original

There are two versions in the catalog, and it's worth not mixing them up. β€œWorld War Z” is the original 2019 game. β€œWorld War Z: Aftermath” is the expanded re-release from 21 September 2021, and it's a complete standalone game: you don't need to buy the base part separately. Aftermath adds to the original:

  • two new story episodes β€” Rome with the Vatican, and the snowbound Kamchatka peninsula;
  • a First-Person mode with a reworked melee system, so you can experience the same campaign in a whole new way;
  • the Vanguard class alongside veterans like the Gunslinger, Hellraiser and Medic;
  • new weapons, including paired sai knives and a tri-barrel shotgun;
  • Horde Mode XL β€” a separate mode with waves where up to a thousand zombies charge at you at once (available on PC and next-gen consoles).

Which version to pick

If you just want to try the co-op and story runs, get the original World War Z. If you're in for the long haul and want maximum content right away β€” the First-Person view and the meatiest hordes β€” Aftermath makes more sense: you get the whole base game plus every added episode in one gift. Both versions are full games, not an add-on on top of something else.

How we deliver the Steam gift

World War Z is delivered here as a Steam Gift through our supplier FZR's bot. On the checkout page you enter your Steam friend invite link (like s.team/p/...) and your account region. The bot then adds itself as your friend, sends the gift and leaves your friends list after delivery β€” you don't need to accept any request or do anything by hand. The whole thing usually takes a couple of minutes from payment. Steam Guard is not required to receive the gift, and your account doesn't need any other games or activity.

Region and compatibility

The main rule for Steam gifts is simple: your account region must match the gift region, otherwise Steam refuses to accept it. The second rule β€” you must not already own the game: a gift won't apply to a title you already have in your library, and that's Steam's own rule, not our limit. The versions in the catalog cover a wide set of regions, so pick the one that fits your account. The game itself is the PC Steam version; on Steam Deck and Linux it runs through the Proton compatibility layer.

Classes, progression and replayability

World War Z doesn't end after a single run. The game has several combat classes β€” from the Gunslinger and the fire-happy Hellraiser to the Medic and the Fixer, and Aftermath adds the Vanguard on top. Each levels up separately: you unlock perks, upgrade weapons and build a loadout around your style and your squad's makeup. Difficulty scales from relaxed to genuinely vicious, where one mistake on a hold point wipes the whole team. Add mutators and wave-based modes where the horde only gets denser, and there's a reason to jump back in for a long time.

Similar co-op shooters

If you enjoyed gunning down a horde as a team, check out related co-op shooters too: Back 4 Blood from the creators of the classic Left 4 Dead, the timeless Left 4 Dead 2, and the wave-based grinder Killing Floor 2. They're all about the same thing β€” four players holding the line against an endless stream of the infected.

Buying in short

You pick a version (original or Aftermath), enter your invite link and Steam account region, pay β€” and accept the gift in Steam. The game stays yours forever, like any purchase in your library.
