FAQ

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition — the whole saga in one build

If you lived through the golden age of real-time strategy, the name Dawn of War says it all. This is the classic Warhammer 40,000 RTS by Relic Entertainment, where battles are won by capturing points, squad morale and brutal melee — not by base-building and economy. The Definitive Edition bundles the original Dawn of War with all its expansions and brings the visuals up to modern displays. Here you buy it as a Steam gift: our bot adds itself to your friends and delivers the game to your library.

What's inside the Definitive Edition

This is the full collection of the first Dawn of War, not a stripped-down version. It includes:

  • Four campaigns — the original Blood Ravens story plus Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm.
  • Nine playable races — Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Imperial Guard, Tau, Necrons, Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle.
  • 100+ multiplayer maps for 2–8 player matches.
  • Built-in mod manager — compatible with mods the community has built over 20+ years.

The Definitive Edition launched on August 14, 2025 and added reworked lighting, upgraded unit textures, improved pathfinding, a new gameplay camera and 64-bit support to the classic — so the game finally runs on modern systems and at 4K without third-party patches.

Full edition vs the Veterans Upgrade

There are two options in the catalog. The full edition is for everyone — pick it if the Definitive Edition isn't on the account yet. The Veterans Upgrade (-30%) is a discounted upgrade for veterans: it only works if the account already owns the old Anniversary Edition (classic Dawn of War) and doesn't yet own the Definitive Edition. If in doubt, take the full edition and you can't go wrong.

How we deliver the gift

This is a Steam Gift, not a key. After your order, our bot adds itself to your friends via your invite link, sends the gift (usually a couple of minutes) and leaves your friends list once it's delivered. You don't need to accept the friend request manually. Steam Guard is not required to receive the gift.

What to check before buying

For Steam to accept the gift, two things must line up: your account region must match the gift region, and the account must not already own the game — Steam won't let you accept a gift for a title you already have. Friend requests must also be allowed in your privacy settings. Pick the variant for your region at checkout and provide a valid invite link.

How Dawn of War differs from typical RTS

The series' signature trait is its focus on combat over resource-hoarding. You gather resources by capturing and holding strategic points across the map, so matches constantly push you toward aggression and maneuver rather than turtling behind walls. Every squad has morale: units suppressed by fire lose effectiveness and may break and run, and the melee finishers with their flashy synced kill animations became the game's calling card. The nine races genuinely play differently — from the straightforward Space Marines to the orky “more is better” economy and the fragile but lethal Eldar.

Campaigns and single-player

The Definitive Edition collects every story arc in the series. The original campaign introduces the Blood Ravens, Winter Assault adds a second side to the conflict, and Dark Crusade and Soulstorm shift the game into a “conquer the world map” format: you pick a race and seize territories step by step, leveling your commander between battles. That's dozens of hours of single-player content before you even touch multiplayer.

Mods and the game's long life

Over 20+ years a huge modding community has grown around Dawn of War — from total conversions to balance patches and brand-new races. The Definitive Edition's built-in mod manager makes installing and switching mods much easier, so the classic turns into a nearly endless sandbox.

Who it's for

Fans of old-school tactical RTS, the 40K universe and anyone who wants a huge campaign for many evenings. If you love the setting, also check the action game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and the co-op shooter Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. And for more Relic strategy, try Company of Heroes 3.
