Total War: WARHAMMER II — epic-scale strategy in the Warhammer Fantasy world
Total War: WARHAMMER II is the second part of the fantasy trilogy by British studio Creative Assembly, released on Steam on September 28, 2017. The game blends the two pillars of the Total War series: deep turn-based strategy on a global campaign map and spectacular real-time battles where thousands of warriors, giant monsters and battle magic clash on the field. Here you don't just move armies — you lead an entire race toward control of the Great Vortex, an ancient magical maelstrom that holds the world back from the invasion of Chaos.
The Eye of the Vortex campaign
The heart of the game is the story campaign Eye of the Vortex. Four races pursue different goals around the Vortex: some want to strengthen it, others to bring it down. As you progress you perform rituals, fend off invasions of Chaos cultists and race rivals who try to beat you to the final struggle for control of the world's magic. Each race plays the campaign differently — with its own mechanics, lords and style.
Which races the base game includes
The base Total War: WARHAMMER II gives you four full races, each with its own gameplay:
- High Elves — masters of diplomacy, intrigue and powerful magic.
- Lizardmen — an ancient civilization with dinosaurs, following the Great Plan of the Old Ones.
- Dark Elves — cruel pirates and slavers who live for conquest.
- Skaven — hordes of ratmen winning through numbers, mad machines and poisonous tech.
Additional races — Tomb Kings, Vampire Coast and others — were released later as separate DLC and are not part of this purchase.
Mortal Empires and the trilogy connection
If you own both the first part and Total War: WARHAMMER II, you unlock the free combined campaign Mortal Empires — a huge map joining the Old and New World with every race you own. And with the third part, the second game's content carries into the even larger Immortal Empires campaign. Your purchase isn't a dead end — it's part of one continuous fantasy saga.
What you get and how delivery works
You buy a full copy of the game, delivered as a Steam gift. Real-time battles
The campaign map is only half of Total War: WARHAMMER II. The other half begins when armies meet in battle: you control units live, flank the enemy, hold a line of pikemen, send dragons and harpies into the sky and unleash firestorms and spells from the lores of magic. Terrain, weather, troop morale and clever use of artillery decide the outcome as much as raw numbers. No two battles are the same — the same army plays completely differently against the disciplined High Elves and against the endless hordes of Skaven.
Legendary lords and heroes
Each race is led by legendary lords drawn from Warhammer lore — with their own story goals, unique abilities, quest chains and signature gear. Leveling a lord unlocks new skills and legendary items, while heroes act as saboteurs, support mages or battlefield duelists. This adds RPG depth on top of the strategy layer.
Multiplayer and modes
Beyond the single-player campaign, the game offers custom and online battles, plus co-op and competitive head-to-head campaign play with a friend. You can build your own army within a points limit and test your tactics against a live opponent — a format where understanding each race's strengths and weaknesses matters more than army size.
