The Isle: dinosaur survival on a predator-filled island
The Isle isn't ยซjust another survival sandboxยป or ยซjust another dinosaur gameยป. Afterthought LLC launched it into Steam Early Access back on December 2, 2015, and it's since become one of the harshest, most atmospheric survival sims out there โ one where you control not a human but a dinosaur. You hatch as a tiny baby in the middle of a huge island and have to grow up without becoming someone's lunch. Here your purchase gives you a full copy of the game on Steam delivered as a gift โ it stays on your account for good.
What kind of game this is
The core mode is Survival. You're born small and vulnerable, pass through several life stages and grow over time: the older your dinosaur, the stronger it gets and the more abilities it unlocks โ from night vision and scent tracking to nesting. Grow fast or die young is the literal rule of survival here. For a less tense experience there's Sandbox: jump straight in as an adult super-predator or a peaceful giant and roam the island without harsh penalties for dying.
Legacy and Evrima โ two branches in one purchase
The Isle has a quirk worth knowing upfront. By default it launches the Legacy branch โ the older version, unsupported since 2019, though some community servers still run it. All active development and the main player base live in the Evrima branch on Unreal Engine 5: new graphics, reworked mechanics, more players. Switching to Evrima is easy โ through the ยซBetasยป tab in the game's Steam properties. Both branches come with the same purchase, no extra cost.
How you receive the game
The Isle is sold here as a Steam gift. You provide a Steam friend invite link and your account region, and the bot does the rest: it adds itself as your friend, sends the gift, and leaves your friends list once delivered. You don't need to accept the friend request. Steam Guard is not required โ you just need friend requests allowed in your profile settings. Delivery usually takes a couple of minutes from checkout.
Region and key conditions
Since this is a gift, there are two things to check before paying. First, your Steam account region must match the gift region โ otherwise Steam won't let you accept it. Second, the account must not already own The Isle: you can't accept a gift for a game that's already in your library. Pick the option that matches your region and you're set.
System notes
Keep in mind the Evrima branch on Unreal Engine 5 is noticeably more demanding than old Legacy. If your PC is weaker you can start on Legacy servers, but remember the main player base and support are on Evrima. The game is still in Early Access, so content and balance keep changing from update to update.
Life stages and growth
The heart of The Isle is the journey from a hatchling to a fully grown predator or herbivore. You start tiny, and at that stage almost any neighbour on the island can kill you, so your first minutes of life are all about caution โ finding water, food and cover. As you grow, more than just your size changes: new abilities unlock, your damage and stamina rise, and adult mechanics like nesting and breeding appear. This growth system turns every life into a small story โ from a vulnerable newborn to a dominant giant โ and losing a grown character genuinely stings.
Atmosphere and hardcore design
The Isle is deliberately unwelcoming. There are no bright markers or quest arrows: you navigate by scent, sound, night vision and your own instincts. The island is large and grim, and the feeling that you're part of the food chain rather than its top keeps you tense almost constantly. That hardcore, almost simulation-like take on survival is exactly why people love it: death carries weight, and every successful hunt or narrow escape sticks with you.
Multiplayer and servers
The Isle is about shared (and not-so-shared) survival on common servers. Dinosaurs of the same species can form packs and herds, coordinate on a hunt or defend territory โ or betray each other. Official and community servers set their own rules and mood, so your experience depends heavily on where you join. The Evrima branch holds most of the player base, so if you want a lively online presence, that's where to play.
