December 1975, the North Sea, the Beira D oil rig. You play electrician Cameron "Caz" McLeary, and an ordinary shift turns into a nightmare: after a catastrophic drilling failure, something nameless tears loose from the deep. No contact with shore, no rescue, just metal bending and sinking around you. Still Wakes the Deep by The Chinese Room is a first-person psychological horror where your best weapon is a clear head, not a shotgun — because there is no shotgun here.

The Chinese Room are the people behind atmospheric titles like Dear Esther and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, and Still Wakes the Deep follows that lineage: it leans on story, place and dread rather than gunplay. The game launched on June 18, 2024. The gameplay is linear and cinematic — you pick your way across a collapsing platform, hide from what stalks the corridors, and solve light puzzles to clear a path or cross a gap. There is no combat system at all; survival runs on stealth and attention.

Beira D isn't an abstract haunted house — it's a believable 1970s oil platform: crew quarters, a mess hall, the drill shaft, howling wind and North Sea waves past the portholes. Editions and what to pick

This page offers two options:

• Game 🎮 — the full Still Wakes the Deep, the complete main story. A global Steam key. This alone takes you through the campaign from start to finish.
• Siren's Rest 🧩 — the story expansion, released June 18, 2025. It jumps to 1986: divers Mhairi and Rob run search-and-recovery on the sunken Beira D wreck, and the platform's past refuses to stay on the seabed. It's roughly 1–2 hours of new story.

Important about Siren's Rest

Siren's Rest is an add-on, not a standalone game. To launch it, the base Still Wakes the Deep must be owned on the same Steam account. If you don't own the base yet, grab the Game first — otherwise the add-on key activates but there's nothing to play. If the main game is already in your library, take Siren's Rest and continue the rig's story eleven years on.

Region and platform

Both options are global Steam keys: they activate worldwide, with no regional lock and no VPN required. This is the Windows PC build; on Steam Deck it runs through the Proton compatibility layer. Once activated, the game and the expansion stay on your account forever, like any Steam purchase.

Length and who it's for

The main story is a compact, dense run with no filler: it leads you by the hand, never strands you for hours, and there's no grind or open world. It's a one-or-two-evening game, but it sticks with you precisely because it's concentrated — every scene serves the atmosphere. It suits players who love story-driven horror and walking-sims with a strong narrative; it's unlikely to land for anyone chasing action, leveling and firefights. Siren's Rest adds one more short but complete story beat on top — this time underwater, eleven years later.

Performance and comfort

The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and leans heavily on lighting, water and destruction effects — it's first and foremost a visual showcase. On PC there are the usual graphics settings, widescreen support and options flexible enough to balance visuals against frame rate for your build. Controls are keyboard-and-mouse or a gamepad, whichever you prefer. On Steam Deck, aim for medium settings through Proton.

How to activate

After payment you receive a code. Open Steam, go to the "Games" menu → "Activate a Product on Steam", enter the key — and Still Wakes the Deep (or Siren's Rest) lands in your library. Then download and play. The key usually arrives quickly and there are no fields to fill in — delivery is by code.
