SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is really two projects in one. On one side there is the remastered SONIC GENERATIONS, where classic and modern Sonic blast through rebuilt versions of the series' most iconic stages. On the other side there is the brand-new SHADOW GENERATIONS campaign, giving Shadow his first full solo adventure with his own powers, bosses and a story about the return of the Black Comet. The game was developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA, releasing on October 24, 2024. Here you get it as a Steam gift — it lands straight in your Steam library.

Why the "X" means two games, not one

It is easy to assume this is just a remaster, but it is not. SONIC GENERATIONS is the polished 2011 classic with updated visuals, while SHADOW GENERATIONS is a completely new story built specifically for this release. As Shadow you unlock a unique set of Doom Powers: Chaos Control slows down time, Doom Surf and Doom Wing change how you move, and Doom Morph opens up new routes through the levels. This is not "Sonic in a black recolor" — Shadow's gameplay has its own feel, leaning into time control and explosive speed.

Editions: what the base game and Digital Deluxe include

We list three items, and the difference between them matters:

  • Base version — the full game: both SONIC GENERATIONS and the entire SHADOW GENERATIONS campaign. This is everything you need to play all the content from start to finish.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition — the same full game plus a bundle of extra content: the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack (movie-themed touches, with Shadow voiced by Keanu Reeves), the Terios skin based on Shadow's original concept, an Extra BGM Pack with additional music tracks, a digital art book with mini soundtrack, and skill points for Sonic Generations. It is all cosmetics and nice extras — it does not change the main story, but collectors and fans of the series' music will appreciate it.
  • Digital Deluxe Upgrade — this is not the game, it is an upgrade add-on. It adds the whole deluxe bundle on top of a base version you already own. Only grab it if you already have the base game and want the bonuses separately.

What makes SHADOW GENERATIONS stand out

The new Shadow campaign is the main reason even players who finished the original Sonic Generations come back to this release. The stages are built around key moments from Shadow's past: the space colony ARK, Sunset Heights, Kingdom Valley and others, all reimagined around his powers. The bosses are big and dramatic — from the Biolizard to Devil Doom — and every fight tests how well you have mastered Chaos Control. The White Space hub connects the levels and hides secrets, collectibles and time trials for anyone chasing 100%.

How to receive the Steam gift and what you need
