Sonic Superstars: classic 2D Sonic, freshly reimagined

Sonic Superstars is the hedgehog's big return to his roots: a pure 2D platformer full of supersonic dashes, loops, springs and rings, but built on a modern engine with vivid 3D visuals. It was made by Arzest and Sonic Team under Sega and launched on October 17, 2023 across PC (Steam), PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. If you grew up on Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive or loved the feel of Sonic Mania, you'll find the same speed and rhythm here in a new package.

What the game is and why it hooks you

The action takes place on the Northstar Islands — a string of varied zones, from emerald jungles to underwater caverns and Eggman's factories. The doctor has built a robot army again, and four heroes set out to stop him: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose. Each has a distinct move set — Tails flies, Knuckles glides and climbs walls, Amy swings her hammer — so the same level plays differently depending on who you pick.

The headline addition is Emerald Powers: collect the Chaos Emeralds and you unlock abilities like cloning your character, turning into water to climb waterfalls, or slowing down time. These aren't cosmetic — they're real tools for finding secrets and shortcuts. The Eggman boss fights are a show in themselves: huge, multi-phase, with mechanics that force you to adapt your style.

Four-player co-op

For the first time in the classic line, Sonic Superstars brings local four-player co-op: the whole crew runs the level at once. It's fun and chaotic — someone rockets ahead while the camera tugs the others along. Beyond the campaign there's Battle Mode, a competitive mode where you collect parts for your own mini-mech — exactly where the extra LEGO arenas from the Deluxe set come in handy.

Which versions exist and which to pick

Three Sonic Superstars options are available here as a Steam gift:

• Sonic Superstars (standard) — the full game: the whole campaign, all characters, Emerald Powers and Battle Mode. This is all you need to play it start to finish.
• Sonic Superstars Digital Deluxe Edition featuring LEGO — the same full game plus bonuses: the LEGO Fun Pack with LEGO-style Tails, Amy and Knuckles skins and extra Battle Mode stages, the Sonic Rabbit skin, the Mecha Sonic Battle Mode skin, main-menu wallpapers, a digital artbook and a mini soundtrack.
• Digital Deluxe Upgrade featuring LEGO — this is not the full game, but the Deluxe content added on top of an already-owned standard Sonic Superstars. Only pick it if the base version is already on your account.

In short: no game at all — grab the standard or the Deluxe Edition. Already own the standard and want the LEGO extras — grab the Deluxe Upgrade.

How we deliver the gift

Delivery runs through the FZR supplier bot. You provide your Steam friend invite link and your account region, place the order, and the bot adds itself as your friend, sends the gift, and automatically removes itself from your friends after delivery. You don't need to accept the friend request, and Steam Guard isn't required. Delivery usually takes a couple of minutes from checkout.

Two conditions matter. First: your Steam account region must match the gift region — otherwise Steam won't let you accept it. Second: for the full editions the game must not already be in your library (a gift can't be accepted on a game you already own); for the Deluxe Upgrade it's the opposite — base Sonic Superstars must already be owned. Also make sure friend invites are allowed in your profile settings, or the bot can't reach you.

Platform and compatibility

This is the PC version on Steam. Once you accept the gift, the game lives in your Steam library like any purchase — you can reinstall it, it works with cloud saves, and it runs anywhere the Steam client does. It also plays great on Steam Deck — the controls and pacing suit a gamepad perfectly.

Common questions before buying

“Is it really my own copy?” — yes, once you accept the gift the game is tied to your account permanently, just like any Steam purchase. “Do I need a powerful PC?” — no, it's a 2D platformer with very modest requirements and runs even on office laptops. “Is there localization?” — the interface and subtitles are localized into many languages; voice work is occasional and language doesn't affect gameplay.
