What PlateUp! is and why people stick with it

The game was developed by It's Happening (originally a solo project by Alastair Janse van Rensburg) and published by Yogscast Games. PlateUp! launched on Steam on 4 August 2022 and quickly gathered a devoted community — by 2024 it had sold more than 1.5 million copies on Steam. The formula is simple to describe and sneaky in practice: blend restaurant management with a roguelike so that every run feels new.

How a single run works

Each run lasts 15 in-game days. During the day you serve a stream of customers: one waits for a steak, another for a pizza, and every one of them loses patience if the plate doesn't arrive on time. At night, between days, you pick random upgrades and rebuild your layout: add new stations, plan waiter routes, automate the busywork. The deeper you go, the higher the stakes and the smarter you have to organise the space — a single badly placed table can collapse the whole service.

• 1–4 players. You can play solo and juggle every role yourself, or split the kitchen with friends — then the key skill isn't cooking, it's communication.
• Permanent progression. Between runs you unlock new dishes, kitchen cards and lasting bonuses that reshape your next attempt.
• Every restaurant is randomised. The dining room layout, available upgrades and difficulty modifiers are generated fresh — there's no memorised "perfect" strategy here.

What's included in the purchase

You get a global Steam key for the base version of PlateUp!. This is the full game, not a demo or early access: with all the menu, progression and co-op mechanics. No mandatory subscription — activate the key and you own the game indefinitely.

Region and platform

The key is global: it activates on Steam in any region of the world, with no country lock and no VPN tricks. It's intended for the Windows (PC) version. On Steam Deck and Linux the game usually runs through the Proton compatibility layer — if you play on such a device, check the compatibility status on the game's page before buying.

How to activate the key on Steam

It takes a couple of clicks. Open the Steam client, click the «Games» menu in the top bar and choose «Activate a Product on Steam». Paste the key we sent you, confirm — and PlateUp! shows up in your library. After that just download the game and gather your crew: three or four cooks at the stove is where the real fun begins.

The depth that reveals itself over time

First impressions are deceiving: behind the cute graphics and blocky chefs hides restaurant management with genuine systemic depth. Over time you learn to read the dining-room layout ahead, place stations so routes don't cross, and combine upgrade cards into synergies — for example, linking serving automation with revenue bonuses. Chef customisation, unlockable dishes from steaks to sushi, and dozens of difficulty modifiers mean that even your hundredth run can throw a situation you've never faced before. This is a game that rewards planning over reflexes — and that's exactly why people come back to it for months.
