Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin β become a Rider, not a hunter
If you're used to classic Monster Hunter, where the monster is your prey, Stories 2 flips the idea completely. Here you're a Rider: you find eggs in dens, hatch them into Monsties and head into battle alongside your tamed monsters. It's a full turn-based JRPG by Capcom set in the Monster Hunter universe β a long story, dozens of hours of playtime and its own combat system. Buying from us, you get a global Steam key: activate it on PC and the game stays in your library forever.
The story
Across the world, Rathalos start vanishing while strange pits glow with pink light. Your hero meets a Wyverian girl named Ena and inherits an egg that hatches into a white-winged Rathalos β a dragon prophesied to bring ruin to all living things. From there it's a journey through Rider and Hunter villages, the mystery of the Elder Dragon Oltura beneath the earth, and a choice: will the grim prophecy come true, or will you rewrite your Monstie's fate? The story stands on its own β you don't need to have played the first Monster Hunter Stories.
How combat works
Battles are turn-based and built on a simple but deep rock-paper-scissors system. Every attack belongs to one of three types:
- Power beats Technical;
- Speed beats Power;
- Technical beats Speed.
You read how the monster will attack and pick the type that overpowers it β winning these clashes builds your bond with your Monstie and fills the Kinship gauge to unleash a powerful joint move from monsterback. You don't have to fight alone: the Buddies system brings in a partner character and their monster, and double attacks turn the toughest fights around.
Monsties, eggs and the Rite of Channeling
The heart of the game is collecting. You explore Monster Dens, carry out eggs and hatch Monsties of all kinds β from adorable to genuinely fearsome. Through the Rite of Channeling you can pass genes and abilities between monsters, building your own perfect team for your playstyle. Each Monstie has a battle role and field skills (jumping, swimming, smashing through rubble) that open up new parts of the map.
What's included in this product
This is the base game of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin for Steam. It includes the full main story and the free post-launch updates Capcom added over time (new quests, monsters and events eventually became part of the base version). Cosmetic add-ons β the Deluxe Kit and separate outfit sets for Ena, Navirou and the Rider β are not included in the key and are sold separately: they already require the game itself. So if you specifically want the costumes and hairstyles, grab them on top after activating the base.
Region and activation
The key is global β it activates in Steam in any region, no VPN needed. It takes a minute: in the Steam client, bottom left, click βGamesβ β βActivate a Product on Steamβ, enter the code, and the game lands in your library. Then download and play as much as you like β the key stays tied to your account forever.
Will it run on your PC
The game isn't demanding by modern standards: it's stylish rather than βheavyβ, so it runs comfortably even on modest setups and plays nicely on Steam Deck. Before buying, check the system requirements on the Steam page to compare your memory and GPU.
Co-op and the arena
You play the campaign solo, but Stories 2 also has an online side. In co-op quests you can team up with another Rider to take down an especially tough monster together, while the PvP arena lets you pit your assembled Monstie team against another player's. It's a whole extra layer on top of the story: a reason to perfect your favourite monsters through genes and the Rite of Channeling, then test them against a live opponent.
Who it's for
If you love JRPGs with creature collecting, a heartfelt story and thoughtful turn-based combat β this is your game, even if you've never touched the main Monster Hunter series. And if you're a hunting fan, you'll enjoy seeing familiar monsters from a whole new angle. While you're here, check out related titles: Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Wilds for classic hunting, or Dragon's Dogma 2 β a big RPG from the same Capcom.
