Metro Awakening: return to the Moscow Metro — this time with your own hands

Metro Awakening is a VR prequel to the cult Metro series, built by Vertigo Games with Deep Silver and overseen by Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the original novels. Released on 7 November 2024, it drags the familiar post-apocalypse into virtual reality: you don't watch a hero from the outside — you descend into the tunnels yourself, shine your flashlight into the dark yourself, and reload a pneumatic rifle with shaking hands as a mutant's growl creeps closer. Buy the Steam key here, and the full game lands in your library to launch in a VR headset through SteamVR.

What the story is about

You play Serdar, a doctor who goes underground after the nuclear war to find his missing wife. The deeper he ventures, the more reality starts to bend — hallucinations, voices, a thinning line between visions and what's truly happening. Set before the events of Metro 2033, it's a standalone story, yet soaked in that signature suffocating-tunnel atmosphere where bullets are worth more than lives and every step could be the last. Series veterans will catch the references; newcomers need no prior knowledge.

How VR changes Metro

The core idea of Awakening is that all of Metro's famous hands-on mechanics are literally in your hands:

  • Weapons for real. Reloading, pumping the “Tikhar” pneumatic rifle, swapping mags, wiping grime and blood off your gas-mask lens — it's all done with physical gestures, not a button press.
  • Light and dark. The dynamo flashlight needs hand-cranking, matches and the lighter are consumables, and the tunnel darkness hits differently when you're actually standing inside it.
  • Resources are precious. Military-grade rounds are the currency of the Metro world, so spending them on shooting always stings. Stealth, conservation and the “shoot or hide” dilemma feel as sharp as in the mainline games.
  • Immersion. Dripping water, creaking old structures, your own breathing inside the mask — in VR it presses on your nerves exactly as intended.

Editions: Standard and Deluxe

Two versions are listed, both global Steam keys.

  • Standard Edition is the complete game, uncut. The full campaign, every mechanic, the whole underground. If you just want the game, this is enough.
  • Deluxe Edition is the same plus the “Memories of Polyanka” pack: a Nosalis Hide backpack skin, a Nosalis Toy charm, The Fallen patch and a Nosalis Skeletal glove skin. It also includes access to a digital concept-art gallery — a nice bonus if you enjoy seeing how the game's look came together.

Let's be honest about it: the difference between editions is purely cosmetic and collectible. Deluxe unlocks no extra levels, changes no difficulty and grants no gameplay advantage — it's for players who want to dress up their gear and grab the art extras. At launch, Deluxe pre-orders had temporary perks (a 48-hour early access window and a starter discount), but that was a one-off November 2024 pre-order promo and can't be a reason to buy today; go by the permanent edition contents above.

How to activate the key

It's the usual Steam flow: open the Steam client, go to the “Games” menu, choose “Activate a Product on Steam”, enter the code you received — and Metro Awakening is added to your library for good. The key is global with no region lock and activates worldwide. After installing, launch the game with your VR headset connected via SteamVR.

What you need to play

Awakening is a full VR title — there's no flat-screen mode. On PC it runs through SteamVR and works with common headsets: Valve Index, HTC Vive, Meta Quest devices (via wired Link or wireless Air Link) and Windows Mixed Reality units. Before buying, make sure you have a VR headset and a VR-capable PC — without a headset the game won't run.

If you love the Metro universe

Awakening is a great way into the underground, but if you want the classic flat-screen entries, check out the related series titles: Metro Exodus with its surface trips and open areas, the grim Metro: Last Light Redux, and where it all began — Metro 2033 Redux. Together they paint the full picture of Glukhovsky's post-apocalyptic Moscow.
