MENACE: Sci-Fi Turn-Based Tactics from the Battle Brothers Team
MENACE is the second major project from Overhype Studios, and if you've sunk hundreds of hours into the mercenary grind of Battle Brothers, you'll recognize the handwriting. Only this time the medieval mud and steel give way to the cold vacuum and dim light of the Wayback System. It's a sci-fi turn-based tactical RPG where you command a dropship squad, deploy onto hostile worlds and win every firefight through calculation rather than luck. Here you buy a Steam activation key (CIS region) — the game lands straight in your library, no middlemen, no subscriptions.
What MENACE is and why it grips you
MENACE runs on one greedy thought: bring your squad out alive and come back stronger for the next mission. Combat is turn-based with a separate to-hit roll for every single bullet, not an abstract «65% chance» for the whole burst. That means cover, angles, range and weapon choice genuinely shape the outcome instead of just dressing up the numbers. The arsenal feels tactile: there are five assault rifles alone, and each one plays differently — recoil, fire rate, its own niche. Behind the battles sits a strategic layer where you upgrade a mobile HQ, run logistics between sorties, decide where to spend scarce resources and build a squad around your own style.
What ships at Early Access launch
MENACE entered Steam Early Access on February 5, 2026, backed by publisher Hooded Horse. At launch the game already includes:
- 50+ mission types that combine into campaigns;
- three distinct biomes, each with its own combat and traversal rules;
- four enemy factions — each demanding a different tactical approach;
- a strategic layer for upgrading your mobile HQ and managing logistics.
This isn't a thin «take a look» build — it's a full tactical sandbox with dozens of hours of play right now.
Early Access: what it means for you
Overhype Studios laid out the plan honestly: roughly a year in Early Access, adding new planets and biomes, extra mission types, new squad leaders and gear, and polishing the balance from player feedback. Buying a key now gets you the current build plus all future Early Access updates at no extra cost. If you're the type who likes to grow alongside a game and shape it with feedback, this is your moment. If you'd rather jump in for the final polish, just keep MENACE on your wishlist and call it yourself.
How to redeem the key on Steam
It's standard and takes a minute. Open the Steam client, click «Add a Game» in the bottom-left corner, pick «Activate a Product on Steam», enter the key we send you and confirm. MENACE then appears in your library, ready to download. One key detail: the key is locked to the CIS region, so activate it on a Steam account whose store country is set to a CIS country (Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and so on). A Steam account from another region may refuse the key — that's a platform restriction, not our choice.
Factions, biomes and hard calls
The four enemy factions in MENACE aren't reskinned bullet-sponges with different health bars. Each one breaks your usual plan in its own way: some swarm you and force you to ration ammo, others punish a badly chosen position, others make you rebuild your squad before you even drop. The three biomes change more than the scenery — they reshape the geometry of the fight: where cover exists, how sightlines cut across the map, where it's safe to move. And above it all sits the strategic layer: every lost soldier and every spent resource echoes into the next mission, so MENACE keeps putting you between greed and caution. That blend of tactics and logistics is exactly where Overhype's signature tension comes from.
Who MENACE is for
If you like tactics built on honest math rather than fudged numbers, MENACE is your turf. Genre fans often describe it as a «space XCOM» with Overhype's signature thoroughness: deployments, losses, hard calls and the satisfaction of a cleanly played fight. Love Battle Brothers for refusing to hold your hand? This shares that DNA, just in a spacesuit. If this approach to turn-based combat speaks to you, take a look at related tactics in our catalog: Battle Brothers from the same studio, plus XCOM 2 and Wartales, another tactical title from publisher Hooded Horse.
