It gathers heroes and villains from the first eight parts of Araki's story, from Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency all the way to Stone Ocean and JoJolion. There's no dedicated narrative campaign here the way the very first All Star Battle had one — instead you get All-Star Battle Mode: well over a hundred scripted fights spread across thirteen to fourteen "pages," each with its own conditions and Secret Missions. Completing those unlocks gold, 3D models, art, music tracks, and alternate costumes.

On top of that there's Arcade Mode, with an eight-fight Challenge Battle and an Endless Challenge for anyone who wants to test their limits against a non-stop stream of opponents, plus Practice Mode for drilling combos and a full Online Mode to face other players.

Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate — what each edition adds

All-Star Battle R originally shipped in three flavors: Standard Edition, just the base game; Digital Deluxe Edition, the game plus a first season pass with extra fighters and a couple of exclusive costumes; and Ultimate Edition, everything in Deluxe plus a second season pass with a few more characters and bonus color sets.
