Hollow Knight: Silksong: Hornet's climb to the top
Hollow Knight: Silksong is a metroidvania by Australian studio Team Cherry and the sequel to the beloved Hollow Knight, released on 4 September 2025 across all platforms at once. The lead this time is Hornet — the swift, needle-wielding hunter you met in the first game. The story has her captured and carried off to the unknown kingdom of Pharloom, and the whole journey is a climb from the bottom upward, toward a shining citadel at the top of the world. How Hornet differs from the Knight
Where Hollow Knight had you play the silent Knight, Hornet is a different temperament entirely. She's faster, bouncier and more acrobatic: she strikes with her needle in quick combos, clings to walls, ricochets off enemies and practically dances around bosses. Combat is built on rhythm and movement rather than trading blows — the game rewards an aggressive, technical style and punishes standing still. So even mechanics you know from the first game feel new.
Silk instead of soul
Silksong's signature idea is the silk system. Hornet both heals and casts with it. Silk builds up during combat, and you can spend it either to restore health (several points at once) or on “Silk Skills” — special attacks and abilities you unlock by exploring. Add tools of three kinds (defensive, support and offensive) with limited charges refilled at Benches using Shell Shards, plus Crests — loadouts that reshape your playstyle by changing tool capacity, attack speed and range, and unique tricks. The result is a flexible system you can tune to your approach.
The kingdom of Pharloom and its denizens
Pharloom is a vast new world, not directly tied to Hallownest from the first game. It has its own biomes, its own architecture, its own cults and pilgrims heading for the same summit you are. The world is still hand-drawn, darkly beautiful and packed with secrets: hidden passages, secret rooms, optional bosses and NPCs with their own stories. New abilities help you move — the Clawline grappling hook, a gliding cloak, vertical dashes and wall traversal — so the further you go, the more freely you fly across the map, opening up areas that were out of reach before.
Fair difficulty, but a mean one
Straight up: Silksong is noticeably harder than the first game. Enemies hit harder, the runbacks to bosses can be long, and the platforming is demanding. That doesn't mean it's unfair — quite the opposite, it's readable and teaches you: almost every death is about something you overlooked or rushed. Exploration, upgrades and new tools gradually smooth the curve, but don't expect a relaxed stroll. If you like a game that respects you through challenge, this is your kind of game.
A standalone game — the first part isn't required
An important point for newcomers: Silksong is a full standalone game, not an add-on. You don't need to own the original Hollow Knight or finish it before starting. The story is framed so you can jump in fresh, though series fans will catch more of the references and ties. So in this card you're getting the whole game at once — no parts to buy separately and no mandatory DLC. What's next: a free expansion
Team Cherry has already announced a free expansion for Silksong, Sea of Sorrow — a nautical-themed chapter coming later. Buying the game now gets you the full base version; the upcoming free expansion is a nice bonus for later, not a reason to wait. The base game alone holds dozens of hours of content.
