FAQ

Guild Wars 2 expansions that keep Tyria alive

Guild Wars 2 by ArenaNet launched back in 2012 and remains one of the most unusual MMORPGs around: no subscription, no rigid tank-heal-DPS holy trinity, and a world that reacts to you on its own. Since 2015 the base game has been completely free β€” make an account, level to 80 and roam the open world without spending a thing. The only paid part is what genuinely expands the game: the expansions. Those keys are exactly what you grab here, and each one opens a new slice of Tyria, new profession specializations and mechanics on top of the free foundation.

What sets Guild Wars 2 apart from other MMOs

The headline feature is dynamic events. You don't chase exclamation marks: events flare up right in the world, anyone nearby can pile in, and everyone is rewarded for their contribution. Combat is built around dodging and positioning β€” rolling out of a hit in time matters more than standing still and mashing buttons. There are nine professions, and through expansions each one gains elite specializations that reshape its playstyle entirely. There's also no pay-to-win leveling here: expansions add content and options, not raw power.

Heart of Thorns + Path of Fire β€” the newcomer's foundation

This two-in-one classic pack is the best first buy after the free base. Heart of Thorns takes you into the dense Maguuma jungle: four large maps, gliders, raids against three bosses and the first wave of elite specializations. Path of Fire adds the thing GW2 is now hard to imagine without β€” mounts: the raptor leaps chasms, the springer bounds up cliffs, the skimmer glides over water and quicksand, and the griffon for flight unlocks later. Together they grant eighteen elite specializations (nine per expansion), a level 80 boost and a shared inventory slot to get you going faster.

End of Dragons β€” Cantha, fishing and a battle turtle

The third major expansion brings players back to the continent of Cantha, which fans had wanted since the original Guild Wars. End of Dragons means dense neon-lit cities, a story about the fate of Tyria's dragons and several fresh mechanics at once: fishing with hundreds of fish species, a personal skiff for sailing the sea and the legendary Siege Turtle β€” a two-seat turtle mount where one player drives and the other fires the weapons mounted on its shell. Add nine new elite specializations and jade bots that assist in combat and out in the world. If you love the setting and want some co-op buzz, this is one of the richest expansions.

Secrets of the Obscure β€” skies, demons and weapon freedom

Released in August 2023, Secrets of the Obscure changed how the game grows and brought three new maps: Skywatch Archipelago and Amnytas in the skies above Tyria, and Nayos β€” the first location beyond the familiar world, in the Realm of Dreams. The big change for theorycrafters is Weaponmaster Training: professions gain access to weapons that used to be locked behind specific elite specs, hugely widening build options. It also added new combat masteries and a streamlined path to the skyscale mount, which used to be a long separate grind.

Janthir Wilds β€” a home, spears and the warclaw on land

The fifth expansion, out in August 2024, leans into personal space and a new combat style. Janthir Wilds gives you the Homestead β€” an account-wide personal plot you decorate and develop your way. For the first time in Guild Wars 2 history a new land weapon type arrives: the two-handed spear, with a unique skill set for every profession. And the warclaw mount can now be used in the open world and in land combat. The Janthir region is misty forests and marshy shores with a story and tone noticeably more intimate than Cantha's busy cities.

Which expansion to get first

If you're brand new, start with the Heart of Thorns + Path of Fire pack: mounts and gliders change how the world feels the most, and the level 80 boost saves time. Love a rich setting and co-op? Look at End of Dragons. Want the freshest content and build freedom? Secrets of the Obscure and Janthir Wilds are the most recent and continue the update line. You don't have to buy everything at once: expansions are standalone, and any of them can be picked up on its own. If you're also eyeing other big online worlds, check out The Elder Scrolls Online, Lost Ark or New World β€” neighbouring MMORPGs in our catalog.

How to activate the key

Every key here is global and activates through Steam. First add the free base Guild Wars 2 on Steam and launch it once so you have a Steam-linked game account. Then in the client open Games β†’ Activate a Product on Steam and enter the code you received. Important: a Steam key only works with the Steam version of the game and won't apply to a standalone ArenaNet account created outside Steam β€” that's specific to the Steam edition. After activation the new content unlocks the next time you log in.
