Garry's Mod โ the Source-engine sandbox that's almost 20 years old and still going
Garry's Mod (GMod for short) isn't really a game so much as a box of tools for doing anything. Grab the Physics Gun, pick up any object, lift it, spin it, freeze it in mid-air; grab the Tool Gun and weld props together with ropes, hinges and motors to build cars, guns, ridiculous catapults and machines that actually work. Build stuff, break stuff, or jump onto a server running a custom game mode and play something completely different. Here you're buying Garry's Mod as a Steam Gift: a bot sends the gift to your account and the game lands in your Steam library.
Where GMod came from and why it won't die
Garry's Mod started life as a Half-Life 2 mod โ Garry Newman released it in 2004, and on November 29, 2006 it launched on Steam as a standalone product. The Source engine, the ragdoll physics and the tool gun haven't changed much since, but a gigantic Steam Workshop grew around it: millions of add-ons, maps, models, modes and rule sets you install in a couple of clicks. It's the community that has kept GMod alive for almost two decades โ Facepunch Studios still ships updates, and Valve remains the publisher.
What people actually play in Garry's Mod
Plain Sandbox mode is just the starting point. Most of the time players live on servers running community game modes:
- Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT) โ a social deduction mode: traitors hide among innocents and you have to spot who's shooting people in the back.
- Prop Hunt โ hide-and-seek where one team turns into props on the map and the other hunts them down.
- DarkRP โ a roleplay mode with an economy, jobs, police and gangsters running a whole city.
- Murder, sandbox builds, races in cars you welded yourself and hundreds of other community ideas.
There's so much content you can go years without repeating yourself โ and almost all of it is free Workshop add-ons.
What to know about content from other Source games
GMod runs on its own, but plenty of maps and models are built on assets from other Valve games โ Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2. If you don't own those, some textures may show up as errors (pink-and-black checkers or red ERROR models). That's not a problem with the gift โ it's just missing content from a specific add-on. The base GMod is fully playable regardless.
Garry's Mod vs the Commercial License โ not the same thing
There are two listings here. The first is the Garry's Mod game itself, an ordinary player copy: download it, play it, dive into the Workshop. The second is the Commercial License: a separate Facepunch license aimed not at players but at hosting providers and companies that rent out GMod servers commercially. It is not a separate copy of the game and not an "enhanced edition" โ a regular player doesn't need it, you can't play it, and it requires the base game. Only grab it if you run a service business around GMod and know why you need a commercial license.
How we deliver the gift
Delivery goes through Steam Gift: our bot adds itself to your friends, sends the gift, and leaves once it's delivered โ no need to accept anything. Steam Guard is not required. Two conditions matter: your Steam account region must match the gift region, and you must NOT already own the game (Steam simply won't let you accept a gift for a game you already have). Your profile must allow friend requests. Delivery usually takes a couple of minutes after you order.
Similar games and sandboxes
If GMod's freedom and physics clicked with you, look at other projects in the same spirit: Rust by the same Facepunch Studios โ a brutal survival game with crafting and raids; Team Fortress 2 โ Valve's team shooter whose models you'll see in countless GMod add-ons; and Half-Life 2 โ the game whose mod Garry's Mod originally grew out of.
The short version
Garry's Mod is an endless physics sandbox plus a gateway to thousands of community modes and add-ons. You get a full copy of the game as a Steam Gift on your own account, no fiddling with keys. Pick your region's variant, make sure you don't already own the game, and start building your wild contraptions.
