FINAL FANTASY IX for PC: a JRPG classic as a Steam gift

FINAL FANTASY IX is the ninth main entry in Square's (now Square Enix) legendary series, originally released on PlayStation in 2000 and reborn as a PC remaster on Steam on April 14, 2016. It's a deliberate return to the series' fairy-tale roots: the medieval world of Gaia, airships, armored knights, black mages and the warm, slightly naive charm of old-school fantasy. Here you buy the full game and receive it as a Steam gift to your own account.

What the story is about

At the heart of the plot is Zidane, a charming thief from the Tantalus troupe, which stages a play to kidnap Princess Garnet from the kingdom of Alexandria. But the princess wants to escape too โ€” fleeing her mother, Queen Brahne, whose hunger for power and mysterious weapons threaten to drag the world into war. Along the way the party gains Vivi, a self-doubting black mage searching for the meaning of his own existence, and Steiner, a knight bound by duty. Together they move from palace intrigue to questions of life, death and why we exist at all โ€” beneath the light fairy-tale wrapping hides one of the most heartfelt stories in the series.

What's in this PC version

This is the 2016 remaster, not a raw PS1 port. The PC edition includes:

  • HD character models and updated movie cutscenes;
  • seven gameplay boosters: high-speed mode, no random encounters, instant ability and stat mastery and more โ€” handy whether you want a relaxed run or a fast replay;
  • Steam achievements and cloud saves;
  • autosave, which the original lacked.

The gameplay stays classic: the turn-based ATB battle system, four active party members in combat, abilities learned through equipment, and the cult Tetra Master card mini-game. If you've missed โ€œthatโ€ Final Fantasy from the PS1 era โ€” this is it, just more convenient.

Combat system and standout features

FINAL FANTASY IX drops faceless โ€œclassesโ€: every hero is a distinct role. Zidane is a nimble thief who steals items from enemies; Vivi is a black mage with devastating spells; Garnet summons eidolons; Steiner fights up close, while the dragoon Freya, the summoner Eiko and others bring their own tricks. Abilities are learned through equipment: wear a piece, earn points in battle, and the skill stays with you for good. A signature of this entry is Trance โ€” a fury gauge that, at its peak, transforms a hero into an empowered form with special attacks. Between fights you can sink into Tetra Master, a collectible card mini-game that quietly eats up extra hours for many players.

Boosters and remaster conveniences

The seven boosters aren't โ€œcheats for the sake of itโ€ โ€” they let you play on your own terms. High-speed mode speeds up movement and grinding; turning off random encounters lets you explore in peace; instant ability and stat mastery helps replayers who don't want to farm again. Want the honest old-school experience? Just leave the boosters off. On top of that, autosave and cloud saves remove the original's biggest pain: no more hunting for a Moogle save point to keep your progress.

Running on modern PC and Steam Deck

This is the native PC version from Steam, so no emulators or workarounds are needed โ€” install and play. The game is light on hardware and runs fine even on modest laptops, and it feels right at home on Steam Deck thanks to its turn-based pace and gamepad support. Some players add fan-made graphics mods on top, but that's entirely optional โ€” the base Steam version is fully self-contained and can be played start to finish without any tweaks.

How we deliver the gift

FINAL FANTASY IX is delivered as a Steam Gift through our bot. You provide your Steam friend invite link and your account region, place the order โ€” then the bot adds itself to your friends and sends the gift, usually within a couple of minutes. You don't need to accept the friend request: after delivery the bot leaves your friends list automatically. Steam Guard is not required for this.

Region and key conditions

The main condition for a gift is that your Steam account region must match the gift region, otherwise Steam simply won't let you accept it. One more thing: FINAL FANTASY IX must not already be in this account's library โ€” a gift can't be accepted for a game you already own. These are the most common hiccups, so pick the option for your region and check your library in advance. Adding friends must be allowed in your profile settings.

Who it's for

FINAL FANTASY IX is a great entry point to the series: the story stands on its own, needs no knowledge of other entries, and the tone is softer and more whimsical than the darker VII and VIII. If you love turn-based JRPGs with strong characters and a big world, go for it. And if you want more Square classics, check out FINAL FANTASY VII, FINAL FANTASY VIII and FINAL FANTASY X โ€” neighboring entries in the same legendary line.
