What kind of game it is

Escape the Backrooms is an atmospheric first-person horror focused on exploration and survival. Realistic graphics, a minimal interface and oppressive silence make it feel like you're truly stuck in a place that doesn't exist. The game entered Early Access on 11 August 2022 and got its full 1.0 release on 23 October 2025 — so this is no longer a rough build, but a finished game with dozens of levels and an ending. Published by Secret Mode, it earned a "Very Positive" rating from tens of thousands of players.

30+ Backrooms levels

The heart of the game is its levels. There are more than thirty, and each is a distinct location with its own rules, enemies and logic. Some are original designs, others are adaptations of classic "levels" from the Backrooms wiki:

  • Level 0 — the iconic yellow rooms where it all begins;
  • flooded parking garages, dark warehouses and endless offices;
  • levels with unique entities, each with its own way of hunting you down;
  • final locations where the tension is cranked to the max.

To clear a level the whole team must reach the exit alive — you can't ditch a teammate and run off alone, and that's the core of the cooperative dread.

Co-op for up to 4 players and solo play

Escape the Backrooms is built for a group: online co-op supports up to 4 players. The standout feature is proximity voice chat: the farther apart you are, the quieter you sound, and entities react to your voice too — so screaming in terror is literally dangerous. You can also play through solo — single-player is supported, the atmosphere just gets even heavier with nobody to watch your back.

What's included and is there DLC

You get the full base version of Escape the Backrooms — every level, every entity and all the 1.0 release content. The game has no separate paid DLC: the developers added new levels as free updates straight into the main game. So there's nothing extra to buy — this is a complete product.
