If you love war strategy where what matters isn't a swarm of units but every single soldier, every shell and every meter of ground — Gates of Hell: Ostfront is exactly that. Made by Barbedwire Studios (published by Digitalmindsoft) and released on June 11, 2021, it grew out of the Call to Arms line and the cult Men of War series. It's set on the Eastern Front of 1941–1945: the Red Army against the Wehrmacht, mud, snow, burning vehicles and hard real-time decisions.

What kind of game it is

On paper it's an RTS, but it plays like a tactical battlefield simulator. You can watch the fight the classic way — top-down, giving orders to squads and tanks. Or at any moment take direct control of a single soldier, or hop into a tank turret as the gunner in first person and fire by hand. That dual lens is the series' signature: the same battle feels like a strategy game one second and a desperate firefight from cover the next.

The realism people play it for

Gates of Hell is meticulous. There are over 250 vehicles and around 100 heavy weapons, and armor isn't a health bar — it's a model of internal modules. A hit can jam the turret, set off the ammo rack, wound the crew, or simply ricochet at a bad angle. Add realistic ballistics, suppression fire, smoke screens, mines, off-map artillery, air support and medics dragging the wounded out. Every battle is a small engineering-and-tactics puzzle.

What the base game includes

You're buying the Standard Edition — a complete base game, nothing extra needed to start. It includes:

  • 12 historical single-player missions for different sides of the conflict;
  • the Dynamic Campaign — a mode where you grow your army across evolving maps against the AI;
  • multiplayer on 30 maps from 1v1 to 4v4 with a doctrine and specialization system;
  • co-op — campaigns can be played with friends.

What about expansions and DLC?

The game has separate story expansions — Talvisota (the Winter War), Scorched Earth, Liberation, Airborne and others, plus a Supporter Pack with cosmetics, an artbook and a making-of documentary. Keep in mind: these are separate DLC and are not part of this gift — here you get the base game itself. The expansions require the base game, so this gift is the right starting point if you don't own Ostfront yet.
