FAQ

Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Ostfront: the Eastern Front in all its brutality

If you love war strategy where what matters isn't a swarm of units but every single soldier, every shell and every meter of ground โ€” Gates of Hell: Ostfront is exactly that. Made by Barbedwire Studios (published by Digitalmindsoft) and released on June 11, 2021, it grew out of the Call to Arms line and the cult Men of War series. It's set on the Eastern Front of 1941โ€“1945: the Red Army against the Wehrmacht, mud, snow, burning vehicles and hard real-time decisions.

What kind of game it is

On paper it's an RTS, but it plays like a tactical battlefield simulator. You can watch the fight the classic way โ€” top-down, giving orders to squads and tanks. Or at any moment take direct control of a single soldier, or hop into a tank turret as the gunner in first person and fire by hand. That dual lens is the series' signature: the same battle feels like a strategy game one second and a desperate firefight from cover the next.

The realism people play it for

Gates of Hell is meticulous. There are over 250 vehicles and around 100 heavy weapons, and armor isn't a health bar โ€” it's a model of internal modules. A hit can jam the turret, set off the ammo rack, wound the crew, or simply ricochet at a bad angle. Add realistic ballistics, suppression fire, smoke screens, mines, off-map artillery, air support and medics dragging the wounded out. Every battle is a small engineering-and-tactics puzzle.

What the base game includes

You're buying the Standard Edition โ€” a complete base game, nothing extra needed to start. It includes:

  • 12 historical single-player missions for different sides of the conflict;
  • the Dynamic Campaign โ€” a mode where you grow your army across evolving maps against the AI;
  • multiplayer on 30 maps from 1v1 to 4v4 with a doctrine and specialization system;
  • co-op โ€” campaigns can be played with friends.

What about expansions and DLC?

The game has separate story expansions โ€” Talvisota (the Winter War), Scorched Earth, Liberation, Airborne and others, plus a Supporter Pack with cosmetics, an artbook and a making-of documentary. Keep in mind: these are separate DLC and are not part of this gift โ€” here you get the base game itself. The expansions require the base game, so this gift is the right starting point if you don't own Ostfront yet.

How you receive the gift

We deliver the game as a Steam Gift via a bot. We need two things from you: your Steam friend invite link (s.team/p/...) and your account region. The bot then adds itself as your friend, sends the gift โ€” usually within a couple of minutes โ€” and leaves your friends list after delivery. You don't need to accept anything, and Steam Guard is not required for this.

Two conditions Steam needs to accept the gift

To keep things smooth, remember two points. First: your Steam account region must match the gift region โ€” otherwise Steam simply won't let you accept it. Second: you must not already own this game โ€” a gift can't be accepted onto a game you already have. Also make sure adding friends is enabled in your profile settings so the bot can reach you.

The Dynamic Campaign: where the hours go

The Dynamic Campaign deserves its own mention โ€” it's one of the headline modes of the base game. It's not a scripted story but an evolving PvE campaign: you lead your squad across a chain of shifting maps, protect your veterans (lose an experienced soldier and you lose his skills too), capture enemy vehicles and gradually build up your force. This is where the series' core idea shines โ€” the value of every single soldier. You don't churn out endless armies; you decide who to risk and who to drag off the field alive.

Who it's for

Ostfront is for players who want deep war tactics and aren't scared of demanding gameplay and serious system requirements (64-bit Windows, ~16 GB RAM, a GTX 1070-class GPU, ~80 GB SSD). If that's your thing, check related titles too: the sequel Gates of Hell: Jubilee, the series classic Men of War: Assault Squad 2 and the base Call to Arms. And this gift is the quick way to drop Ostfront straight into your library.
