Where the whole zombies mode began

World at War was the debut of the cooperative survival mode against the undead. How the gift is delivered

World at War is remembered not for its graphics but for how it tells its story. The campaign doesn't shy away from showing war harshly: allies don't always make it back, the enemy doesn't surrender, and the final Eastern Front missions are still cited as some of the darkest in the series. The multiplayer set the template every later Call of Duty followed: weapon progression, perks, killstreak rewards — right down to the attack dogs you'd call in for a kill streak. And zombies turned a simple bonus mode into a whole religion for millions of players. For many, World at War is the exact point where their love of the series began, and today it's a genuine piece of genre history worth having in your library.

How this zombies mode differs from later ones

Here zombies are as tight and honest as it gets: one map, Nacht der Untoten, a boarded-up building, crumbling windows and mounting pressure with every wave. There are no elaborate easter-egg quests or the overloaded mythology of later entries — just you, your teammates, points, and the decision of when to open the next door and when to save up. That very simplicity is what made the mode iconic: easy to grasp, impossible to put down. If you only know zombies from modern Call of Duty, the original feels like a breath of fresh air.
