Combat, stealth and gadgets

The heart of Arkham City is the freeflow system: strikes, counters, throws and combos chain into one continuous flow, and a whole crowd of enemies becomes a fluid dance once you learn to read the counter timers. Alongside it sits predator mode: when foes carry guns, you slip into the shadows, grapple up to gargoyles, take enemies down one by one and spread panic. Your gadget arsenal grows as you play — batarang, grapnel, explosive gel, the electrical disruptor, smoke pellets — and many of them serve not just combat but the Riddler's puzzles, hundreds of which are scattered across the city.

Story and Gotham's villains

Arkham City is a walled-off district of Gotham turned into a giant prison overseen by Hugo Strange. Over a single night Batman is pulled into a clash with nearly every major villain of the universe: a poisoned, dying Joker, Two-Face who has captured Catwoman, the Riddler and his trials, Mr. Freeze, the Penguin, Ra's al Ghul and Talia. The script keeps the tension up to the finale and is considered one of the best in superhero games — which is exactly why Arkham City earned its Game of the Year status.
