Assetto Corsa: the driving sim you fall for behind the wheel
Assetto Corsa isn't an arcade drift-to-music racer — it's a serious driving simulator from Italy's Kunos Simulazioni. It left Steam Early Access in December 2014 and has since become a benchmark used by streamers, real-life drivers and esports racers alike. What sets Assetto Corsa apart
The headline feature is the physics. There's no “glued to the road” magic here: every car behaves the way it would in reality, with its own weight distribution, suspension behaviour, tyre heat and wear. The tracks aren't eyeballed — they're laser-scanned: Monza, Nürburgring, Spa, Brands Hatch and others are recreated down to the bumps on the apex. So a lap of a track you know feels exactly right, not just “close enough”.
Cars and modes
The base game already ships with a large roster — from classic road coupés and hot hatches to full-on race cars and legendary sports machines. You get single races, hotlaps and time-attack chasing the perfect lap, races against the AI, a drift mode and online play. There's no story-style career: Assetto Corsa is about pure driving and sharpening your own craft, not grinding a garage for numbers.
Wheel, gamepad and force feedback
You can play on a gamepad or even a keyboard, but the game truly opens up with a force-feedback wheel: your hands feel the front axle about to wash out and you catch the car with your body, not your eyes. VR is supported too — sitting in the cockpit in a headset is a whole other level of immersion. If you own a wheel and pedals, Assetto Corsa is one of the best ways to use them.
Modding: a second life
A big reason Assetto Corsa is still alive after all these years is its huge modding community. Community tools like Content Manager (a far better launcher than the default) and Custom Shaders Patch (new graphics, weather, time of day) turn a 2014 title into a modern-looking sim. Thousands of free cars and tracks, even whole open “cruise maps”, all install on top of the base game. You get the base Assetto Corsa game on Steam — a full copy that's enough to drive with no limits. The paid DLC packs (Dream Pack 1–3, Japanese Pack, Red Pack, Porsche Packs, Ready To Race and others) are not part of this gift — they're separate add-ons you can buy later if you want. Don't confuse Assetto Corsa with its relatives: Assetto Corsa Competizione is a separate game about GT touring-car racing, and Assetto Corsa EVO is the new generation of the series. They're different products, and one doesn't replace the other.
How we deliver the Steam gift

Platforms and Steam Deck
Assetto Corsa is a Windows PC game. The base version also runs on Steam Deck and on Linux via Proton, and runs well for many. Just note: the popular community tools (Content Manager, Custom Shaders Patch) are built for Windows and don't always behave perfectly on Deck/Linux — fine for clean vanilla driving, but a Windows PC is more comfortable for heavy modding.
