What the game is and why people still play it

Age of Empires II is a historical real-time strategy: you gather wood, gold, stone and food, build a town, raise an army and crush your opponent while they try to do the same. The trick is that decades on, it hasn't aged out — quite the opposite. It has a living ranked ladder, tournaments with prize pools, a huge community, and dozens of unique civilizations each with their own bonuses, units and tech trees. The Britons lean on archers, the Mongols on cavalry and siege, the Teutons on an unbreakable defense. Every match is a small 20-40 minute chess drama.

This is the "full re-release" of the original and its classic expansions, not the bare 1999 base. Inside you get:

The big paid expansions released later — Lords of the West, Dawn of the Dukes, Dynasties of India, Return of Rome (16 May 2023), The Mountain Royals and Victors and Vanquished — are separate DLC and are not part of this gift. The base is self-contained, though: it holds hundreds of hours of content without a single DLC.
